Long Ago Captures » Blog Archive » Jane Eyre Loses Ellen Page
25 October, 2009 » Jane Eyre Loses Ellen Page

The Jane Eyre adaptation starring Ellen Page did not disappeared after all! However, while the movie is still reportedly a go, Ellen Page is no longer attached. In my opinion, I was very disappointed she was announced as the new Jane. I also wondered why people were bothering with a new adaptation when the BBC just aired its own in 2006. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books and I have decided that I will welcome any new adaptation if it means a really good one will get released! The Samantha Morton version is by far my favorite! Whowould you like to see as Jane? My choice? Claire Foy. She can pull off “plain” and still be pretty.

Bronte and Austen movie adaptations are cyclical things. Every young actress seems to get her shot at playing Elizabeth Bennet, Emma Woodhouse, Jane Eyre, or Catherine Earnshaw. Five years later, they’re now Mature Actresses, and watching the next crop come through the English classics. Right now, we’re on the Brontes (spurred undoubtedly by Bella and Edward) and Ruby Films’ adaptation of Jane Eyre spurred a lot of talk when it hooked Ellen Page as its poor and plain heroine. Variety reports that Page has officially dropped out of the project, but that it’s landed Cary Fukunaga as its director.

Never thought of Claire as Jane but as soon as I read your suggestion I could easily picture her.

Jane Eyre is definitely right there at the very top of my favourite books and I always love to see adaptations. My favourite one is really the recent BBC versions, as it got IMO not only the acting etc right but also the atmosphere & visuals (except the final scene, I didn’t like that). But the Samantha Morton version is really great, I like both her Jane and Ciaran’s Mr. Rochester. The 1996 version I liked how they did the young Jane Eyre part a lot – not so keen on the rest.

Anyway, I wish they’d go ahead with adapting another of Charlotte’s novels instead, to be honest, e.g. Shelley or Vilette. It’s really a shame that there aren’t any!

I am slightly disappointed that Ellen Page won’t be Jane, as I thought that although she was a bit too cute, she looked the part well. However, I am far more concerned with the casting of Rochester….any details, anyone? Please???!!! I’ve been dying to know who he will be played by ever since I found out about this new adaption.
P.S. But how can the Samantha Morton be your favorite? I personally cannot stand anything that shows Rochester throwing Jane’s luggage out when she decides to leave him. :S

oops: Samantha Morton version; Í’ve been studying for an exam for 5 hours, sorry about that.

@Mia I think more Bronte novels should be turned into movies… I wish I was more familiar with them!

@Kristine I don’t even remember that scene. Of course, that version has its flaws. I could not stand the Jane in the one with Anna Paquin (Charlotte… Gains… something?). The 2006 Jane annoyed me as well (but she has so many fans). Samantha Morton, I thought, did such a good job. I’m waiting for a miniseries that feels as dark and thoughtful as the book did and doesn’t skip over Jane’s childhood and St. John. Samantha’s version left out so much.

… Maybe I should give the 2006 one another viewing… I never actually finished it.
