25 October, 2009 » Keira Wins My Fair Lady

After reports that Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway were both in the running for My Fair Lady, it has been reported that Keira Knightley has won the role and that Joe Wright, who directed Keira in Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, will direct. I really loved Pride & Prejudice and thought Atonement was very well-made despite my not involving myself in the story very much. Joe Wright has a talent for beautiful-looking films. He will do an excellent job!

Mandrake hears that the 24-year-old actress has beaten Scarlett Johansson to the part of Eliza Doolittle in a new film adaptation of My Fair Lady.

Her victory comes as I can disclose that Joe Wright, who inspired Knightley to her best performance, in Pride and Prejudice, has been chosen to direct the film.

“Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely,” says a friend of the 37-year-old director.

25 October, 2009 » Sarah Polley is Queen Kristina

According to SarahPolley.org, the actress will play Queen Kristina of Sweden in the 1600s.

Canadian film actress Sarah Polley will star as the 17th century Queen of Sweden in the dramatic feature Queen Kristina, to be directed by Mika “The House Of Branching Love” Kaurismäki.

The real Kristina, born into Swedish royalty in 1626, was her father’s only heir, raised as a Prince and educated as a boy. Upon her father’s death she took the oath as a king, not a queen and was nicknamed ‘Girl King’.

The film will lense in Canada and Sweden, winter/spring of 2011 for a Canadian release by Union Pictures…

25 October, 2009 » Jane Eyre Loses Ellen Page

The Jane Eyre adaptation starring Ellen Page did not disappeared after all! However, while the movie is still reportedly a go, Ellen Page is no longer attached. In my opinion, I was very disappointed she was announced as the new Jane. I also wondered why people were bothering with a new adaptation when the BBC just aired its own in 2006. Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books and I have decided that I will welcome any new adaptation if it means a really good one will get released! The Samantha Morton version is by far my favorite! Whowould you like to see as Jane? My choice? Claire Foy. She can pull off “plain” and still be pretty.

14 October, 2009 » Canal Plus’ Borgias

Finally, an update about the first announced Borgias television show (to be aired in Europe on Canal Plus). This article says that no one has been cast for the show yet but they are looking for “European talent.” As well, shooting will take place May-December 2010.

CANNES — Former HBO exec Chris Albrecht is taking crime drama from the streets of New Jersey to the streets of Spain and Rome during the height of the Renaissance for “The Borgias,” produced by Gallic pay TV group Canal Plus and Lagardere Entertainment.

Written by Tom Fontana, “The Borgias” will follow the famous crime family through its reign of terror at the Vatican at the turn of the century when Rodrigo Borgia was pope. Fontana and Albrecht were in Cannes on Monday to continue discussions with potential European partners.

7 October, 2009 » Carice Von Houten in Black Death

A new picture has been released of Dutch actress Carice Von Houten in Black Death. The site says she is playing a necromancer and that the film is going to be a thriller. You can see the full-sized picture at this website. I am wondering what people anticipating the movie think of the new picture? Black Death is one of two Black Death films coming out with similar plots. This particular one stars Eddie Redmayne and Sean Bean. The other is called Season of the Witch.
