In an attempt to make the adaptation “younger,” two new leads have been cast in the upcoming Wuthering Heights: Gemma Arterton and Ed Westwick from Gossip Girl. Arterton replaces Abbie Cornish, who replaced Natalie Portman. As much as I love the first two actresses, I am glad new adaptations of classic novels are being cast with actors closer to the ages of the characters in the books.
According to the producers, actors who have appeared in past versions – most famously Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier in 1939 – have been too old to play the characters in Emily Bronte’s novel.
Arterton is 23 and Westwick only 21. Producer Robert Bernstein explained: “We have cast it as written. Heathcliff is a teen and the story takes him into his early 20s. Cathy is just as young. It’s radical because usually actors playing these characters are much older.”
Bright Star, an upcoming movie about the poet John Keats, was recently show at Cannes. The film stars Abbie Cornish and Ben Wishaw. Reuters recently posted a review, which you can read below. The movie looks beautifully shot and I am excited to see it.
A treat for romantics and those who take their poetry seriously, New Zealand director Jane Campion’s gorgeously filmed “Bright Star,” a competition entry at the Cannes Film Festival, may not be a joy forever, but it will do until the next joy comes along.
With much grace and at considerable leisure, 1993 Palme d’Or winner Campion (“The Piano”) tells the story of the brief love affair between the gifted poet John Keats, who died young, and Fanny Brawne. Ben Whishaw plays Keats with impeccable tragedy, and Abbie Cornish portrays winningly the beautiful seamstress Fanny, whose passion is constrained only by the rigorous mores of the times.
The blurb on the DVD cover describes this movie perfectly: “Beowulf meets Predator.” DVD screen captures from Outlander have been added to the gallery! The movie stars Jim Caviezel and Sophia Myles. Science fiction/monster elements have been left out.
I spent the evening watching and capping The Reader. I thought it was quite good, especially the latter half. Because of the nudity in the film, I left out those particular screen captures. As well, much of the film takes place post-1960, which means all scenes with Ralph Fiennes, who plays the main character when he is older, have been left out.
First of all, I should let those of you who have managed to access this part of the website that Long Ago Captures is undergoing some changes. I am moving the gallery, so do not be alarmed if many of the screencaps are missing! Anyway, I have made screen captures from Rome season 1 episode 2.
28 May, 2009 » Eagle of the Ninth: Bigger Than Braveheart
A new film, Eagle of the Ninth, is being called bigger than Braveheart before it has even begun filming. If this is so, then it is very good news as I am a very big Braveheart fan! The story is based on the same source as Centurion, another upcoming movie.
A Scottish movie is being tipped as a bigger blockbuster than Braveheart… before it is even filmed.
The Eagle Of The Ninth, about an ancient Roman Legion, is being filmed in Glasgow, Loch Lomond and the Highlands this summer.
The pounds 15million epic will star Donald Sutherland, Channing Tatum and Jamie Bell, who was the ballet dancing star of Billy Elliot.
The film was written and will be directed by Glasgow-born filmmaker Kevin Macdonald, whose previous credits include The Last King Of Scotland and the recent Russell Crowe thriller State Of Play.
Hello everyone. Just to let you know, I am currently transferring the gallery. Since the site started out as just a gallery, I am finding things behind the scenes to be a little cluttered to take care of. I apologize if things go missing from the gallery for the next while. I will try to get this done as soon as possible!
