The poster for The Tempest, a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play, has made it online. The movie stars Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, and Helen Mirren as Prospera, the main character whose gender was changed from the original Prospero. You can view the new stills and poster at IMDb and Daemon’s Movies.
In Shakespeare’s fantastical thriller the magician Prospero orchestrates spirits, monsters, a grief-stricken king, a wise old councillor, two treacherous brothers and a storm at sea into a fantastical conspiracy bringing banishment, sorcery and shipwreck into the lives of two hapless lovers to stir and seal their fate. Here Prospero takes female form as Prospera, giving her journey of vengeance and self-discovery a wholly new resonance. As Prospera breaks her magical staff against an entrancing volcanic landscape at the end of her heroic quest, this poignant story of love and forgiveness translates into a riveting and filmic mystical tale, for our own times.
I don’t know how long this has been online, but I recently just came across the trailer for Black Death. Although it is often compared to the upcoming and delayed Season of the Witch, I think that they may be very different. You can view the trailer for Season of the Witch to compare for yourself here.
Check out these two websites (here and here) for set photos from the upcoming Red Riding Hood film starring Amanda Seyfried. Judging by the photos, it looks like they are going for a more fairytale rather than historical atmosphere. Here is the synopsis from IMDb: “Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure.” The movie is being filmed in Vancouver and is directed by Twilight‘s Catherine Hardwicke.
Sorry about the lack of updates! I’m sure this is old news by now, but Angelina Jolie, according to Wikeez, is to play Cleopatra. I admit that I didn’t like this casting choice at first, but I think it could work. What do you think?
The Oscar winner actress Angelina Jolie is set to play Cleopatra in an upcoming movie based on Cleopatra’s biography by Stacy Schiff.
According to the producer Scott Rudin, Angelina Jolie is the only actress in mind to portray the Egyptian queen, as he said that “she has the perfect look and that the movie is being developed for and with Jolie.”
The role of Cleopatra has most famously been played by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 movie of the same name.
Sorry for the long delay in updates. I will try my best to update on a few upcoming movies tonight. Firstly, The Three Musketeers, another film coming to screens in 3D, has acquired a few new cast members. According to The Toronto Sun, however, there are two “duelling” Musketeer films in production, so I hope I don’t get them confused. Many characters are already cast in the Paul W.S. Anderson version:
Orlando Bloom has reportedly joined the cast of Paul W.S. Anderson’s “The Three Musketeers,” in which he will be playing the role of the Duke of Buckingham.
The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star joins a cast which includes Christoph Waltz as Cardinal Richelieu, Logan Lerman as D’Artagnan, Matthew MacFadyen as Athos, Ray Stevenson as Porthos, Luke Evans as Aramis, Milla Jovovich as Lady De Winter, James Corden as Planchet and Mads Mikkelsen as Rochefort.
Many upcoming historical movies are happening that I am not aware of yet! Here is one I found out about today: Burke and Hare. It is currently filming and takes place in the 1800s. The IMDb synopsis says, “A black comedy about two 19th century grave robbers who find a lucrative business providing cadavers for an Edinburgh medical school.” You can view pictures of filming at Isla Fisher Web. Click “Read More” to find out about the second film.
Burke and Hare is due for release later this year and tells the story of the real life criminals were responsible for the deaths of at least 17 people from 1827 until 1828. After murdering their victims, the pair then went on to sell the bodies to Dr Robert Knox, who dissected them in his anatomy classes at Barclay’s anatomy school in Surgeon’s Square.
24 April, 2010 » Brooding Brontës Replace Jane Austen
The Times Online posted an article about the upcoming Brontë adaptations of Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. I honestly don’t know why these films are being called rivals when I think most Victorian literature fans will be happy to watch both! The article also includes the first still of Mia Wasikowska as Jane Eyre. Looks promising! Click “Read More” or the link to read the full article. Also, BrontëBlog is an excellent place to find out news about all the Brontë works.
In 1847 a pair of extraordinary novels appeared two months apart, apparently written by brothers.
Jane Eyre proved an immediate success while Wuthering Heights was sneered at as “wild, confused, disjointed and improbable”. Today both are among the classics of English literature.
Next year the stories are to go head to head once more, in cinemas, more than 160 years after Charlotte and Emily Brontë published them under the pseudonyms Currer and Ellis Bell.
Two new clips from Robin Hood have been released! The first one shows Robin and his men “storming a French castle” and the second clip is a funny scene with Robin and Marion. There is also a new poster, which was brought to my attention by Cate Blanchett Fan. The movie opens May 14 and I’m excited to finally see it.
